Dermal fillers are used in aesthetic medicine to restore or add volume in the face. While there are numerous brands of dermal fillers including Restylane, Revanesse, Juvéderm, and RHA, they are all made of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring substance produced by the body to aid in tissue hydration and joint movements. Since it retains water, HA is responsible for giving the skin a supple, plump appearance.
HA dermal fillers are similar to the HA in our bodies, except that they are more viscous (thick) and cohesive. These are the properties that allow them to restore or add volume.
Dermal fillers are commonly injected into the:
- Temples
- Cheeks
- Lips
- Perioral region
- Chin
- Jawline
Dose: how much will I need?
- Filler is often dosed in half or one milliliter (mL) increments. For reference, one milliliter of filler is equivalent to the volume of one blueberry. The amount needed depends on the area(s) being treated, as well as the desired result. In some cases, it is best to have filler injected over two-three sessions to achieve optimal results.
Duration: how long do they last?
- HA dermal fillers are commonly FDA-cleared to last anywhere from 6-18 months, but new research indicates that they may last even longer.
