Neuromodulators are used in aesthetic medicine to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles formed by repetitive muscle contractions (think forehead lines and those pesky “11s” between your eyebrows). While there are numerous brands of neuromodulators, including Botox, Dysport, Juveau, Xeomin, and Daxxify, they all work by blocking the release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction, which leads to temporary muscle paralysis. Inhibiting muscle movement prevents static lines from deepening (or forming) and gives the skin an opportunity to repair itself.
Neuromodulators can be injected into:
- The forehead
- Between the eyebrows (referred to as the glabellar complex)
- Around the eyes
- The chin
- Above the upper lip (“lip flip”)
- The masseters – for facial slimming and to help with jaw clenching
- The platysmal bands in the neck – for facial slimming and to help prevent jowls
- The skin (i.e., above the muscle) – to reduce pore size and rosacea (redness).
