Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that diminishes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, and pigment. This is achieved by creating micro-punctures in the dermis of the skin, which in turn induces collagen production. Microneedling can be performed on the face and neck. A series of 3 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, is recommended for those new to microneedling followed by a maintenance treatment every 6 months.
The treatment
- Prior to microneedling, the skin is numbed with a topical cream for 30 minutes to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible. The microneedling device is comprised of 6 small needles that spin while being moved in a circular pattern across the skin. A hyaluronic acid serum is used to help the needles glide smoothly. The entire treatment takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
Immediately after treatment
- After treatment, it is normal for the skin to be red and have a sun-burned appearance. The skin often feels hot and tight for the first few hours, as well. Applying hyaluronic acid and using a handheld fan can help alleviate any initial discomfort.
Post-care
- Redness, tightness, and slight swelling are normal for the first 2-3 days following treatment. As the skin heals, some peeling may also occur. Makeup can be worn 24-hours post-treatment. Retinols, exfoliants, and vitamin C products should be avoided for at least 7 days after treatment.
Results
- Collagen production takes time, so the best results are seen 2-3 months after the third treatment.
